When God's Timing Feels Like Forever
Share
You know that feeling, don't you?
When you're sitting with your journal open, pen in hand, and all you can think to write is "How much longer, God?"
I've been there too, friend.
In fact, if you could flip through my journal from the past few months, you'd see those exact words scattered across way too many pages.
There's something about certain seasons that makes us hyper-aware of waiting.
Maybe it's December with all its anticipation and preparation.
Maybe it's that place you're in right now where you're asking God for clarity, for breakthrough, for that next step you've been praying about.
And honestly?
Sometimes it feels like He's taking forever to answer.
But what if I told you that your "not yet" season isn't evidence that you're behind or that God has forgotten about you?
What if it's actually one of the most sacred spaces where He does His deepest work in your heart?
The Lie We've All Believed About Spiritual Growth
Here's what our culture (and sometimes even church culture) tells us:
By a certain age, or after walking with God for a certain amount of time, you should have it all figured out.
You should have arrived at some magical place of spiritual maturity where you never struggle, never doubt, never feel lost in the waiting.
And when you find yourself journaling questions instead of answers, when you're wrestling with God instead of resting in Him, when you're asking "when?" more than you're saying "thank you" - well, that must mean you're doing something wrong.
Can I tell you something?
That's a lie.
And it's a dangerous one because it keeps us from embracing the beautiful, messy, very human process of growing closer to God.
The truth that God has been laying on my heart lately is this: waiting isn't punishment.
It's preparation.
Your current season of questions and uncertainty isn't evidence that you're failing in your faith.
It's proof that you're growing.
And God? He's not frustrated with your process, even if you are.
What God Is Actually Doing in Your "Not Yet" Season
I used to think that waiting on God's timing meant sitting on the sidelines of my own life.
Like I was supposed to put everything on pause until He gave me the green light to move forward.
But here's what I've discovered through my own seasons of waiting (and lots of honest conversations with Him in my journal):
God isn't making you wait because He's withholding something good from you.
He's developing something beautiful in you.
Think about it - when you're in a season where you don't have all the answers, what happens?
You lean in closer to Him.
You spend more time in His Word, searching for wisdom.
You find yourself having deeper, more honest conversations with Him than you've ever had before.
You discover parts of His character you never noticed when life felt easier.
The "not yet" isn't God's way of saying "you're not ready."
It's His way of saying "I'm preparing something in you that's going to be so much better than what you originally asked for."
And friend, that preparation? It happens best in the waiting.
When you're journaling through the uncertainty, when you're seeking Him in the questions, when you're learning to trust His heart even when you can't see His hand - that's where the real transformation happens.
How to Journal Through the Waiting (Without Going Crazy)
Okay, let's get practical for a minute.
Because knowing that waiting is sacred is one thing - actually walking through it with grace is another.
Here's what I've learned about journaling with Jesus through these "not yet" seasons:
Start with honesty, not perfection.
Don't feel like you have to clean up your thoughts before you bring them to God.
He already knows you're frustrated, confused, or tired of waiting.
Write it down. All of it.
"God, I don't understand why this is taking so long."
"I'm scared You've forgotten about me."
"I need to see some kind of sign that You're still working."
Ask Him questions, then listen.
After you pour out your heart, sit quietly and ask Him: "What do You want me to know today?"
Then write whatever comes to mind, even if it's just one word or a simple phrase.
You might be surprised by what He whispers to your heart when you create space to hear Him.
Look for His faithfulness in the small things.
When you're waiting for the big breakthrough, it's easy to miss the little ways God is showing up every day.
Make it a habit to write down one thing each day that reminds you of His goodness.
Maybe it's a conversation with a friend, a verse that jumped out at you, or even just the fact that you woke up with breath in your lungs.
Remember: this isn't about having perfect faith.
It's about having honest faith.
And honest faith asks hard questions, wrestles with uncertainty, and still chooses to believe that God's heart is good even when His timeline doesn't make sense.
Your Journey Has Divine Purpose (Yes, Even This Part)
Can I share something that might change how you see your current season?
Every moment of wondering if you're on the right track, every journal entry filled with more questions than answers, every time you've felt like you're taking forever to "get it" - it all has divine purpose.
God isn't looking at your process thinking, "Wow, she's really taking her time with this."
He's looking at your heart and seeing exactly what He knew would be there: a woman who cares deeply about growing closer to Him.
Your desire to go deeper, even when you don't know how, is beautiful to Him.
Your willingness to keep showing up in your journal, even when the words feel messy, matters to Him.
Your questions aren't bothering Him - they're drawing you closer to Him.
And that longing you feel for a more authentic relationship with God?
That's not evidence that you're behind.
That's evidence that He's stirring something beautiful in your heart.
The women who inspire you, the ones who seem to have such deep, confident faith?
They walked through seasons just like this one.
They had journal pages filled with "when?" and "how much longer?"
They wondered if they were doing it right, if they were hearing from God, if they were growing fast enough.
The difference isn't that they figured it all out.
The difference is that they learned to find God in the waiting, to hear His voice in the questions, and to trust His heart even in the uncertainty.
And friend, that's exactly what's happening in you right now.
Your Next Step in This Beautiful Journey
So where do you go from here?
Right where you are, with exactly what you have.
You don't need to have it all figured out to take the next step with God.
You don't need perfect faith to start deepening your relationship with Him.
You just need to show up - messy, honest, and willing.
If you're feeling stirred by what we've talked about today, I want to encourage you with something that has been such a gift in my own waiting seasons.
Sometimes we need reminders of God's faithfulness when our own faith feels shaky.
Sometimes we need His promises written down where we can see them when the waiting gets hard.
I've put together a collection of Scriptures of Encouragement - verses that have carried me through my own "not yet" seasons and reminded me that God's timing is always perfect, even when it doesn't feel like it.

And remember, you're not walking this journey alone.
There's a whole community of women just like you - women who are learning to find God in the waiting, to hear His voice in their journals, and to trust His heart even when His timeline doesn't make sense.
Your current season isn't a detour from your spiritual growth.
It's the very place where God is doing some of His most beautiful work in your heart.
Keep showing up. Keep asking questions. Keep journaling with Jesus.
He's walking every step of this journey with you, and I'm honored to be walking alongside you too. ✨
